Since its creation in 1968, the Lacanau Surf Club has established itself as a French surfing institution. Located on the central beach of Lacanau-Océan, this historic club, led by the passionate Nicolas Lesueur, continues to train generations of surfers by combining tradition, innovation, and a strong community spirit.
Founded by a group of pioneers over 50 years ago, the Lacanau Surf Club is much more than just a school. Certified by the French Surfing Federation, it embodies a dual identity: that of a training club that supports its members year-round, and that of a school open to everyone, from the youngest children to seasoned competitors.
Can you tell us the story of your surf school?
THE Lacanau Surf Club is one of France's historic surf clubs, founded in 1968 by a handful of enthusiasts. For over 50 years, we have been passing on the values of surfing—respect, sharing, and connection to the ocean—to generations of surfers. We are a training club, a surf school certified by the French Surfing Federation, and a key player in local life in Lacanau.
Where do you mainly teach and what courses do you offer?
Our courses take place mainly on the central beach of Lacanau-Océan, in the heart of a coastline renowned for the quality and consistency of its waves. We offer introductory and advanced courses, and, above all , year-round coaching for all levels, with a competition section.
In summer, the emphasis is on weekly courses, and the rest of the year, we run regular groups and specific projects such as health surfing or sea classes.
Who are your classes aimed at, and what time of year?
Our courses are for everyone!
Children from 4 years old, with our Local Kids section, teenagers, adults, locals or holidaymakers, beginners as well as competitors. We also welcome specific audiences as part of our health , disability or school projects. The school is open from February to December, our instructors accompany licensees and competitors throughout the year.
What do you think makes your school unique?
What makes us unique is our dual identity: both an associative club and a certified school. We don't just teach surfing; we train surfers, future instructors, we create social bonds around the ocean, and we actively participate in the life of the resort.
Our instructors are all qualified and passionate, and the quality of the courses and the structure of the club are what our students often remember first.

A memorable memory or a nice anecdote to share?
There are many, but we think of a surf session during a trip to Morocco organized for members. I was in front of the camera, the waves were exceptional and we saw a member take off on a bomb, we all screamed!!! He surfed it to the shore and we went to congratulate him by running on the beach. It was a magnificent moment of sharing where transmission truly takes on its meaning.
